Nigeria’s number one problem is tribalism. Tribalism is the thing that allows Nigerians to be divided. It allows for corruption. It prevents true nation building and collaboration for progress. Historically, it permitted slavery and colonialism, and now prevents economic progress. It wastes the talent of its people, particularly the poor of the North.

Anytime two Nigerians first meet, one of the first things they enquire about each other is what state they are from. Anywhere else this would be an innocuous question, except for with Nigerians. Once origin is established, depending on the answer, either walls or bridges are built between them. This impacts effective nation building. Every tribe thinks they are better than other tribes, and blames other tribes for lack of progress. Northerners blame Southerners, and Southerners blame Northerners, West blames East, and so forth.

Very few people look at the facts.
Most of the wealth is in the South:
But much of the population is in the North
The electricity grid focuses into the South (when it works):
Basic health is better in the South:
Education levels diverge massively between North and South:

Leading to a generation of neglected youth in the North called the
The Almajiri. The Almajiri: Abused, neglected

This breaks the country down along tribal lines and makes it is easy to exploit using tribalism and religion.
This has a huge impact on politics
Everybody wants their share of the oil money.

Although now gradually diversifying, Nigeria’s petro-economy puts tremendous amounts of power at the centre. Your state and tribe expects…
This forces everybody to want to get their slice of the national cake. It’s our time to chop… Chinua Achebe showed how a well meaning man could fall victim to this in his book “No Longer At Ease”.

Another manifestation of this is the constant addition of new states to the federal structure, and new local government areas at the state level. This increases the cost of administration in a country that needs to invest in capital projects, not civil service and political budget line items. But tribalism requires you control your own future, as you believe you can’t trust the other tribes.
